Kidnap/Ransom Consulting
The Berntsen Group provides an immediate response to a Kidnap and Ransom event unlike any other company. It maintains a combination of U.S. and Foreign consultants that work in tandem in Mexico City/Mexico, Sao Paolo/Brazil, Caracas/Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Buenos Aires/Argentina, La Paz/Bolivia, Manila/The Republic of the Philippines, and Hong Kong/Peoples Republic of China which facilitate in country and regional response. Kidnap and Ransom Cases in Africa and the Middle East are responded to from New York. We respond within a few hours once an event is reported to our office.
Consultants of The Berntsen Group speak the local languages fluently and have intimate knowledge of local customs. This awareness allows for the employment of appropriate strategies to achieve the safe return of victims. Our New York, San Diego and Miami staff is bilingual and act as follow-on responders. The majority of the cases to which we have responded have been in Mexico, Venezuela, Honduras, Bolivia, Colombia and Trinidad and Tobago. Our success is partly attributed to the support provided to the consultant assigned. Our staff and consultants are in daily communications with management in New York and have the advice of other Berntsen Group consultants, receive country intelligence updates and when needed, are supported by a sophisticated network of contacts maintained by the Berntsen Group.
Pre-Incident Briefings
The Berntsen Group provides pre-incident training on kidnapping matters with an emphasis on preventive awareness. Our consultants provide information to a client on the common methods of operation by kidnap groups working in the particular location to which a client resides or will travel. Our consultants will train our clients to identify kidnap planning indicators by locally operating groups. A set of behavioral guidelines for the client and his family are prepared by the consultant, which lessens the possibility of a kidnapping event. The client is also provided with survival training and instructed on how to act if he/she becomes the victim of a kidnapping or hostage situation. Clients will have 24-hour access to consultants who are available to provide guidance when a client becomes aware of kidnap planning indicators by criminal or terrorist groups as a means of disrupting such an operation.
Extortion
Many companies that provide crisis management services neglect the threat of extortion. Because a kidnapping has yet to occur the extortion effort is viewed as somewhat less important. The Berntsen Group emphasizes the need to respond appropriately to extortion attempts to ensure that a kidnapping or other crime is not perpetuated against a client or a family member. A Berntsen Group consultant will respond and conduct an assessment of the risk factors for the individual client, family member or business. A tailor-made plan to minimize the risks identified will be developed and recommended. This approach has been proven successful in thwarting extortion attempts.
Missing Persons
The Berntsen Group's worldwide network of consultants and contacts are employed in this effort. A thorough gathering of detailed information about the missing person is obtained and thereafter our network becomes engaged in the effort. The interested parties, be they family, close friends or business partners, are provided continual updates on the progress of our investigation.
